DCF YOUTH COUNCIL 5K RAISES NEARLY $3,400 TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN COMMUNITY

Lawrenceburg, Ind., MAY 22, 2015The Dearborn Community Foundation (DCF) Youth Council recently raised $3,378 at its third annual DCF Youth Council 5K Run/Walk. The Youth Council, which is made up of 19 high school-age youth (grades 9-12), split proceeds from the event 50-50 between the Lauren Hill Make A Difference Fund and the DCF Youth Council Fund, both endowments at the Foundation.

DCF established the Lauren Hill Make A Difference Fund in late November to honor Hill, a Greendale resident, who died at the age of 19 on April 10 after a battle with terminal brain cancer. Hill inspired people around the world with her courageous efforts to live her dream of playing college basketball and to raise more than $1.5 million for The Cure Starts Now Foundation to fund cancer research. DCF awards meaningful grants through the fund, following Hill’s fine example of philanthropy and her motto to “Never Give Up!”

”Youth Council members are inspired by Lauren Hill and wanted to honor her by raising funds for the endowment fund established in her name,” said Denise Sedler, DCF Program Director.

The DCF Youth Council Fund was established three years ago to allow youth council members the opportunity to learn more about philanthropy and to award grants to charitable causes in the community. The council has now raised more than $10,000 for charitable causes in the last three years. The Youth Council’s endowment fund at DCF currently is valued at $11,223.

“These young people set a fine example for folks of all ages through their philanthropy and community service,” said Sedler. “They are learning how fulfilling it is to make a difference in other people’s lives.”

In spite of rainy conditions, more than 50 people participated in the April 19 DCF Youth Council 5K Run/Walk. Sedler said the Foundation and DCF Youth Council greatly appreciate those who participated and the kind support of the following fine race sponsors:
