YOUTH COUNCIL 5K RAISES $3,600 FOR PANTRIES, ENDOWMENT

Lawrenceburg, Ind., MAY 1, 2013 – The Dearborn Community Foundation (DCF) Youth Council raised a total of $3,600 for Dearborn County food pantries and the DCF Youth Council Endowment Fund at its first-ever 5K Run/Walk on April 21 along Lawrenceburg’s riverfront.

The Youth Council, which is made up of 15 high school-age youth (grades 9-12), will split the $3,600 in proceeds from the 5K Run/Walk 50-50 between the food pantries and the DCF Youth Council Endowment Fund. The endowment fund was established to allow the youth to make charitable grants in Dearborn County.

More than 120 participants ran or walked the 5K (3.1 miles) to help the Youth Council make a difference in Dearborn County, said Denise Sedler, DCF Program Director. “We didn’t know what to expect our first time organizing a 5K,” she said. “We are very pleased there were so many participants and sponsors that supported what the Youth Council is trying to do in our community.”

The top three male/female runners/walkers were awarded medals. Brad Fortuna was the overall race winner, running the 5K in a time of 16:48. Jeff Smith was the number two male runner (20:34) and Brad Seymour was the third-place male runner (21:11). Amanda Batta was the first-place female runner with a time of 22:41. Allison Weaver was the No. 2 female (24:04) and Ashley Sedler was the third-place female runner (25:01). Jenna Baumgartner was the overall walk winner with a time of 34:59. The second-place female walker was Lesa Hornbach (38:12) and the third-place female walker was Debra Galey (39:46). The top male walker was Mike Hornbach with a time of 41:55. The second-place male walker was Scott Wilson (48:37) with Brett Caldwell finishing third (48:51). For full results, go to stuartroadracing.com.

The 5K Run/Walk would not have been such a great success without the kind support of race sponsors, the Youth Council volunteers and many other DCF volunteers, Sedler said. She also expressed special thanks to Stuart Road Racing LLC and Ivy Tech Community College. Stuart Road Racing timed the race and provided its valuable expertise and advice to the Youth Council in the planning of its first 5K. Ivy Tech opened its doors on Sunday to allow DCF to have in-door registration. The Youth Council also thanks the City of Lawrenceburg and the Lawrenceburg Conservancy District for allowing the use of the Lawrenceburg portion of Dearborn Trails for the event.
